How this data was built — methodology
1. Data sources
City of Ottawa election workbooks: 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022. We add up polling-place results and check them against the published totals. The 2014–2022 workbooks are official results; the City labels its 2010 download as not certified.
2. How the numbers are calculated
Each percentage is the fraction below multiplied by 100. Valid votes are votes counted for a candidate; blank or overvoted contests are excluded.
- Ballot turnout: ballots cast ÷ registered voters.
- Valid council vote participation: valid councillor votes ÷ registered voters. This is different from ballot turnout.
- Candidate share: candidate votes ÷ all valid votes in the same race and polls.
- Mayor history bars: each candidate group's votes ÷ registered voters citywide. The remainder includes non-voters and ballots without a valid mayor vote.
- Ward bars (% of registered voters): council results count every voter in the ward, so in 2018 and 2022 “didn’t vote” = registered − council ballots. Council ballots minus ward-coded mayor ballots gives the ward’s special-poll voters, whose mayor choice isn’t reported by ward; these add up exactly to the City’s special-poll totals. 2010 and 2014 lack full ward ballot counts, so those bars combine non-voters with blank ballots or special-poll voters.
Ward average gives each ward equal weight and excludes missing values; it is not citywide turnout. Changes are percentage points: 45% minus 40% is +5 points. Displayed figures are rounded.
3. Why citywide mayor totals differ from ward totals
In 2014, 2018 and 2022, special advance mayor votes are reported under citywide polling codes. The 2022 file also reports special mail-in votes this way. We include them in city totals, but cannot assign them to home wards. The mayor map therefore shows leaders in ward-coded polls, not complete ward winners. Regular advance votes with ward codes are included. Special voters are never counted as non-voters.
4. Gaps and comparisons
Full ward ballot counts are available for 2018 and 2022. For earlier years, use valid council vote participation instead. Wards 7 and 15 lack 2010 council results; a conflicting 2010 Ward 6 candidate total is flagged in its history.
The map uses 2022 ward boundaries. Older values describe the original election-year wards. We withhold 2018–2022 ward changes because the boundaries have not been matched. Ward 24 did not exist before 2022; its earlier values are left blank.
